There is no age limit or points score requirement to work in Australia as a Psychiatrist. Due to a shortage of qualified Psychiatrists, the role is on the new Core Skills in Demand List.
This means Internationally Qualified Psychiatrists can live and work in Australia with the new Skills in Demand (SID) Visa with a clear pathway to Permanent Residence. This new Employer Sponsored Visa replaced the old TSS Visa and makes it much easier for employers to hire Psychiatrists.
If you are a Psychiatrist seriously considering working in Australia then Medical Migration™ would love to hear from you. We work exclusively with ‘job ready’ Mental Health Candidates and approved Employers throughout Australia actively hiring Internationally Qualified Psychiatry Professionals.
While there are hundreds of vacancies for Psychiatrists in Australia, to be seriously considered for Employer Sponsored jobs, these are the steps you are required to take:
Primary Source Verification (PSV) is the process of verifying the authenticity of your qualifications as a Psychiatrist.
This verification comes directly from the original source (e.g., Universities and Medical Schools). This ensures that your Psychiatry qualifications are genuine and meet the Australian standards.
Medical Migration™ is the fastest growing recruitment agency for Psychiatrist IMGs relocating to Australia. Our Medical Recruitment Specialists can arrange your Primary Source Verification: Learn More
Submit your Tertiary Medical and Psychiatry qualifications for assessment by the Australian Medical Council (AMC). Start by creating an AMC portfolio online at the AMC website. This portfolio serves as your primary hub for submitting documents and tracking your application status.
Next, initiate the primary source verification of your medical and Psychiatry qualifications through the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) using their Electronic Portfolio of International Credentials (EPIC) service.
Set up your EPIC account and submit your Psychiatry qualifications for verification. The ECFMG will verify your credentials and forward the reports directly to the AMC.
Determine the appropriate AMC assessment pathway for your qualifications. Depending on your training and Psychiatry experience, you will follow either:
As an Psychiatrist, you will likely be on the Competent Authority Pathway. The Competent Authority Pathway is designed for international medical graduates (IMGs) who have already completed a recognized training program and have passed their examinations in the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Ireland or New Zealand. This pathway allows these IMGs to streamline the process of obtaining medical registration in Australia.
As a Psychiatrist on the Competent Authority Pathway you are exempt from the AMC CAT MCQ (Computer Adaptive Test Multiple-Choice Questions) Examination.
This examination is part of the Standard Pathway administered by the Australian Medical Council (AMC) and evaluates the medical knowledge of Psychiatrist IMGs to ensure they meet the standards required for medical practice in Australia.
Complete the relevant AMC application form and collate all documents including your primary medical degree, internship or residency completion certificates. Ensure that you correctly certify all documents according to AMC guidelines. Submit these documents to the AMC for assessment and pay the following fees:
Once your Medical and Psychiatry qualifications are verified, the AMC will issue your AMC Certificate. This certificate is essential for registering with the Medical Board of Australia.
Our Medical Recruitment Specialists can arrange your Primary Source Verification and AMC Registration in our capacity as Medical Recruiter for the Australian Healthcare Sector: Learn More
With your AMC Certificate, apply for registration with the Medical Board of Australia (AHPRA) to legally practice as a qualified Psychiatrist in Australia.
At this point you are considered ‘Job Ready’ and our teams will work tirelessly to match you with the right employer at no cost to you. We are not Visa Agents, we are Medical Recruitment Specialists that match Overseas Qualified qualified Psychiatrists with Australian Healthcare Employers.
All qualified Psychiatry applicants are required to already hold registration by the Medical Board of Australia. The type of registration (limited, provisional or general) depends on your qualifications and experience. Usually an Internationally Qualified Psychiatrist will be granted a Provisional License and then after 12 months this converts to full registration.
In Australia, the professional college responsible for Cardiologists is the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP). This is the institution that oversees the training, accreditation, and continuing professional development of Psychiatrists in Australia and New Zealand.
Specialist registration can be granted by RANZCP, although expect this process to take between one and two years, whereas the Competent Authority Pathway can take as little as 4 months.
There are a number of jobs in Australia for Psychiatrists in geographic areas of need. If you secure a job as a Psychiatrist in an ‘Area of Need’ you can fast track through the RANZCP registration and get specialist registered with the Medical Board of Australia in less than 6 weeks.
However, you will only be able to practice in your designated ‘area of need’.
Medical Migration™ is the go to International Recruiter for Psychiatry employers in the Australian Healthcare Industry. We are not a general medical job board, we work personally with our clients to match them with suitable employers in Australia.
We only work with ‘Approved Employers’ of Psychiatrists in Australia. Being an Approved Employer means they have already received approval from the Australian Government to employ Overseas Qualified Psychiatrists.
We work exclusively with approved Healthcare sponsors throughout Australia to capitalize on the new Skills in Demand Visas in Australia for Psychiatrists.
This new visa class makes it far easier for Australia employers to hire qualified foreign Psychiatrists, with a clear pathway to Permanent Residency.
The Skills in Demand Visa lasts for an initial four years, and is renewable once (making 8 years in total).
The Visa benefits from processing time of less than 4 weeks, and it also grants you 180 days to find a new employer should you choose to switch roles. Unlike previous Employer Sponsored Visas, there is no age limit for the new Skills in Demand Visas.
Our Psychiatrist candidates do not have to pay for their visa processing services and it is illegal in Australia to have a new hire pay their own Visa fees.
Medical Migration™ is not a Visa Agency. We are specialist Psychiatry recruiters for the Australian Healthcare Sector.
We represent Internationally Qualified Psychiatrists and our team of 20+ recruiters deliver a full suite of recruitment services and enterprise talent solutions.
We receive thousands of speculative Psychiatry job applications each week from all over the World. Many of these applicants are suitable, although they do not hold registration.
As an Internationally Qualified Psychiatrist you will not progress to interview stage without this registration.
There are two ways of getting registered
Remember, as a Psychiatry Recruitment Consultancy there is no cost to you to use our service, all we require is that you have your Provisional Psychiatry License.
We receive all types of vacancies from our employers including specialist Psychiatry roles and even those suitable for individuals in Australia on a Working Holiday Visa.
Hiring Psychiatrists from overseas has become easier for Australian employers with the new “Skills in Demand Visa,” which simplifies the previous Employer Sponsored (TSS) Visas.
Employers no longer need to advertise positions through Workforce Australia. Now they only need to run two adverts for their Psychiatrist positions. The advertisement period has extended from four to six months.
The Skills in Demand visa introduced a trailing fee model, reducing the financial burden of upfront payments for Psychiatrist employers. This also makes it easier for workers to move between employers by taking away the large upfront cost from the initial sponsoring employer.
The Migration Amendment (Strengthening Employer Compliance) Act, effective from 1 July 2024, introduced stricter penalties and established new offenses for violations of sponsorship obligations. The approval process for Psychiatrists sponsorship applications will include a thorough examination of employer workplace practices, compliance history, any negative findings from regulatory bodies, and past bankruptcies.
Additional steps will enhance post-arrival monitoring to ensure employers adhere to fair pay and conditions for workers. This involves coordination with the tax system and the integration of Tax File Numbers and Single Touch Payroll systems.
These changes have made the Skills in Demand visa more straightforward for employers to hire overseas qualified Psychiatrists.
Firstly, you will need to verify your primary medical qualifications through the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) via the Educational Credentials Evaluation Service (ECES). This verification process costs AUD $500.
You will then need to apply through the Australian Medical Council (AMC) via the Competent Authority Pathway. The costs associated with this pathway include a verification fee of AUD $500 and an application fee of approximately AUD $2,000. These fees cover the processing and evaluation of your application by the AMC.
If you are applying for the Specialist Registration Pathway and not the Competent Authority Pathway then you will also be required to pay for an assessment of your overseas specialist qualifications by the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP). The assessment fee charged by the RANZCP is between AUD $7,000 and $8,000, depending on complexity.
Once your qualifications are recognized, you will also need to apply for provisional registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). The application fee for provisional registration is AUD $860.
Medical Migration™ can handle the whole registration process for you from start to finish, simply take our Eligibility Check to find out more.
Medical Migration™ currently works with Internationally Qualified Psychiatrists from the following Countries:
Australia’s decision to greenlight MDMA and psilocybin for specific mental health treatments marks a transformative moment in the field of psychiatry and psychology. Effective from July 1, 2023, this move by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) places the country at the forefront of psychedelic-assisted therapy, offering new and promising treatment pathways for conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and treatment-resistant depression.
Authorized psychiatrists can now prescribe these substances in tightly regulated therapeutic settings, signaling a significant evolution in mental health care approaches.
This progressive shift creates an exciting opportunity for clinical psychologists interested in relocating to Australia. The adoption of psychedelic-assisted therapy into mainstream mental health care calls for practitioners who are well-versed in both conventional therapeutic methods and innovative psychedelic techniques. Leading institutions, such as Monash University's Clinical Psychedelic Lab, are spearheading research and providing specialized training programs to prepare psychologists for this emerging field.
By participating in these cutting-edge therapies, psychologists can play a pivotal role in advancing mental health treatment, while gaining invaluable experience in a globally recognized therapeutic environment.
As a foreign qualified Psychiatrist you are eligible for the Skills in Demand Visa (SID) provided you secure a formal job offer.
The Skills in Demand Visa has a clear path to Permanent Residence, with no age limit.
As a qualified Psychiatrist you may be eligible for other Australia Visas such as the subclass 189 190 and 491. However, because these Skilled Migration Visas have an age limit, require a Skills Assessment and a certain number of points, the process can take up to two or more years to process.
The total cost for a Skilled Migration application can run into many $000's with no guarantee of success. The maximum cost of a Skills in Demand Visa is simply the cost of your Provisional registration.
Once you have your Provisional Registration as a Psychiatrist we will work to place you ASAP.
However, you can still apply for Psychiatrist jobs on your own or through the usual sources. You are not tied to us and their are no fees to use our recruitment service.
It is illegal for an Australian Employer to charge you to process an Employer Sponsored Visa.
We are a recruitment specialist that matches overseas qualified Psychiatrists with jobs in Australia. Any Visa fees will be paid for by your employer.
We actively recruit Psychiatrists for employers in the following Australian States:
The Specialist Skills Pathway is designed for Psychiatrists with a job offer of at least $135,000 AUD. This pathway offers priority processing within 7 days.
The Core Skills Pathway requires guaranteed annual earnings of at least $70,000 AUD and takes up to 21 days.
If your Tertiary qualifications were taught exclusively in English there is no need for a Psychiatrist to sit an IELTS English test to work in Australia or get registered with AHPRA.
Psychiatrists in Australia can find employment in a variety of settings, including public hospitals, private practices, community mental health services, and academic institutions.
There are also opportunities in specialized areas such as child and adolescent psychiatry, forensic psychiatry, and addiction psychiatry.
